Environmental Impact and Sustainable Development

Environmental and sustainability issues are crucially important to the long-term viability of any regeneration initiative and are moving towards the centre of regeneration policy. The aim of this seminar is to introduce delegates to a range of current environmental impact and sustainable development issues. Delegates explore the history of how sustainability has developed and how this links into today’s policies and frameworks including planning and the effect of ‘carbon zero’ targets. A range of methods of assessing of assessing environmental impact during the design, construction and operation of a project are discussed and linked to practical examples. Delegates are encouraged to assess the effectiveness of sustainability methods and evaluate the suitability of the current methods available.

Seminar Learning Objectives

  1. To explore the history and theory of sustainability in the UK and internationally, with a particular emphasis on environmental aspects;
  2. To examine the current UK planning policy framework and other guidance in relation to sustainability and regeneration;
  3. To become with familiar with a range of methods of assessing environmental impact during the design, construction and operation of a project; and
  4. To examine methods of appraising the adequacy of an environmental impact assessment.

Seminar Learning Outcomes

  1. Explore the theory of sustainability as it relates to regeneration processes;
  2. Discuss the current UK planning policy framework and other guidance in relation to sustainability and regeneration and highlight international best practice examples; and
  3. Examine practical case study material and apply methods to appraise the adequacy of an environmental impact assessment.
