Currently at the University of Liverpool Management School, Alan is Director of Studies for the University of Liverpool Online MBA Programme. He has previously taught enterprise and regeneration at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Alan has worked with public, private and third sector organisations in delivering a range of research and teaching.

Alan has a current research portfolio that falls into two related areas focused on the ‘management’ of regeneration and business formation and sustainability in poorer neighbourhoods. Currently Alan is working on several projects. Firstly a three-year funded research initiative in partnership with a Housing Association that aims to establish a Community Land Trust as part of the regeneration of two of the most deprived wards in England. He is also examining the barriers to enterprise in depleted communities, with a particular emphasis on new business start up and sustainability. The other project is another three-year funded research project looking at culture-led regeneration on Merseyside during and after the designation of European Capital of Culture.

Alan currently teaches on the BURA Regeneration Training Programme on the Regeneration and its Management.
